The offending game.

Mortal Kombat is a fighting game made by Sega in 1992 for various consoles.

Gameplay

Mortal Kombat is a graphic fighting game in which the fighters are in an arena and forced to fight to the death. The moves are violent and gory, such as dismembering the opponent's arms as a way of finishing them off, or simply tearing them in half.

Controversy

This game has gone down as the most controversial game of all time. Due to its low 13+ rating, it allowed many children to play the game. Many parents objected to the game, saying that it could warp their children's minds and make them violent. In 1997, a young boy killed his friend with a knife after play-wrestling with him. The boy's mother sued Midway Games, claiming that her son died because of his friend's strong obsession with the game. Midway Games apologised for any problems this game caused, and released non-gory versions of this game.

Triva

  • The game has been banned in some countries.
  • The game was not released on Wii's Virtual Console because of the gory violence.
  • This game led to the creation of the ESRB. Eventually, the later ports of this game received an M (mature) rating.
