Super Mario Land is a 1989 platform video game in the Mario series developed by Nintendo R&D1 and released for Nintendo's Game Boy handheld. It was a launch title for the console, and marked the first appearance of Princess Daisy in the Mario series. Unlike the preceding games in the series, Super Mario Land does not take place in the Mushroom Kingdom; instead, it takes place in the kingdom of Sarasaland. Bowser, the main villain of the series, is replaced by an alien named Tatanga. Also unlike the main series games, Shigeru Miyamoto had no involvement in the game's production, but instead was run by Gunpei Yokoi as guiding producer. The game has two sequels: Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (which marks the first appearance of Wario) and Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (the first installment in the Wario spin-off series of games). The game was rereleased on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console as a launch title in mid-2011. Because the game was not produced by Nintendo EAD, it was treated as a separate entry from the Super Mario Bros. series until they were included as part of that series' 30th anniversary.
