Ulysses S. Grant (b. April 22, 1822 – d. July 23, 1885) was the 18th President of the United States. He served from 1869 until 1877. He won fame as a general under Abraham Lincoln, but by the time he won office, scandals erupted that damaged his reputation. Colorado became a state during his term. His name at birth was Hiram Ulysses Grant, but, when he was first drafted, the man who gave him his draft card misnamed him as Ulysses Simpson Grant (Simpson was his mother's maiden name). Grant accepted the card, feeling that other members of the regiment would make fun about his initials (H.U.G.)
