Wii is a seventh-generation home game console released by Nintendo EAD in 2006. It is the fifth Nintendo home game console, and the first with wireless capabilities.

About it

The console was announced in 2002, and was named Wii in 2005. It was released in 2006 in time for Christmas. The console received universal and critical acclaim. The console was highly praised for the use of the Wii Remote, games, graphics, online shopping and backwards compatibility with the Nintendo GameCube.

The obsessive movements used to control some of the games has been praised by exercise companies, with some advertising the console for its movements. However, the obsessive movements is known to cause tennis elbow in some cases.

The console has been remade into the Wii Family Edition and the Wii Mini in 2011, which both eliminated Gamecube compatibility. The console was then succeeded by the Wii U in 2012, and the Wii was discontinued in 2013.

Startup

Early versions of the Wii had 12 small boards with Wii on it flash on the screen, before the player is then directed to the Wii Menu

The Health and Safety Information flashes on the screen. When the player presses the A button, the player goes to the Wii Menu.

  • The console sold more than 101 million units, making it the best-selling Nintendo home game console of all time.
  • The best-selling game for the Wii is Wii Sports at 82 million copies, which makes it the best-selling game of all time.
  • The console's IR sensor uses infrared technology, the first of a kind for a game console.
